Luke the beloved physician wrote about Jesus, “And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus asks, “whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation?” where we read:
And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
The verse reads, “And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation?” Luke began with the words, “And the Lord said” or “and the one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “whereunto then” which means “what therefore, accordingly, consequently and these things being so” “shall I liken the men” or “will the Lord compare or illustrate by comparison the people whether males or females” “of this generation” which means “belonging to the current rank or group of people who were very much like each other in endowments, pursuits and character”? Luke shared how Jesus began to question to what He could “compare” the current “group of people”.
The verse continues, “and to what are they like?” Luke added the words, “and to what” which means “and to what kind of example” “are they like” or “are the people within the current generations to be compared”? Luke shared how Jesus continued to wonder to what He could “compare” the current “generation” of people.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired to show the “religious” people who were surrounding Him to what they should be “compared”. Jesus knew the “hearts” of these religious leaders were not easily satisfied and were constantly in doubt of Him. People who have hardened hearts do not easily believe in Jesus nor do they desire to have Him be their “Savior and Lord”. Regardless of the proofs within the scriptures that are spoken about Him, people often reject the Messiah Jesus, and they become like the “generation” who were with Jesus during His time on earth. Those who are wise will examine the evidence in the scriptures carefully, and find Jesus to be the Messiah and Christ of God He was sent to be.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus answers His own question by saying, “they are like unto children sitting in the marketplace”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
