The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus said, “love you your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shares how Jesus said, “be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful” where we read:
Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
The verse reads, “Be you therefore merciful, ...” Luke began with the words, “be you therefore” or “you disciples of Jesus then, wherefore, accordingly and consequently exist as”, “merciful” which means “compassionate and full of tender mercy”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed the disciples who were listening to Him to be “compassionate” and “filled with tender mercy” toward others.
The verse continues, “... as your Father also is merciful.” Luke added the words, “as your Father” which means “even like and according to the way God the Father” “also is merciful” or “even so and indeed is compassionate and filled with tender mercy”. Luke shared how Jesus said His disciples were to be like their “Father God” who is “merciful”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn another way the disciples of Jesus were to live in this world. Whereas people are often “unmerciful” and lack compassion, those who follow Jesus are to be “merciful” and have “tender mercy” toward others. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. He is “merciful” and full of “compassion” toward people who do not deserve it, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and be “merciful” to others even as He extends His “mercy” to them.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “judge not, and you shall not be judged”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
