Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus told Simon the Pharisee, “There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, You have rightly judged. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, See you this woman? I entered into your house, you gave me no water for my feet: but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. You gave me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in has not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil you did not anoint: but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto you, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little”, and in chapter seven and verse forty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus said to the woman, “thy sins are forgiven” where we read:
And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
The verse reads, “And he said unto her, ...” Luke began with the word, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto her” which means “to the woman who washed His feet with her tears and hair” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to speak to the woman who demonstrated her love to Him by attending to His feet.
The verse goes on to say, “... Thy sins are forgiven.” Luke continued with the words, “thy sins” which means “your errors, missing of the mark, wrongs and violations to God's law” “are forgiven” or “are remitted, not allowed to hinder, sent forth, forsaken and laid aside”. Luke shared how Jesus told the woman that her “errors, wrongs and violations to God's law” were “remitted and laid aside”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see Jesus speak directly to the woman concerning the status of her sins. She had “sinned” much, and yet she came humble before the Lord Jesus with weeping and sacrifice to demonstrate her love for Him. Jesus responded by “forgiving” her sins, and He will do so for ever person who yields themselves to Him in this manner. The first step toward remittance and forgiveness of sins is to be aware that a person has sinned, and when they humbly come to Jesus, admit their sins and ask Him to forgive, not only does He remit their sins, but He also grants them the promise of everlasting life with His Heavenly Father God. Let all who read these words come before Jesus in the manner of this woman, regardless of how sinful they may be, and receive the Lord Jesus' remittance of sins today.
Next time Luke shares what, “ they that sat at meat with” Jesus said, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
