John the Baptist's Doubt - Luke 7:20

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the disciples of John showed” John “of all these things. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another?”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty of his book Luke shared how John's disciples tell Jesus, “John Baptist has sent us unto you” where we read:

When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist has sent us unto you, saying,

Are you he that should come? or look we for another?

The verse reads, “When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist has sent us unto you, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “when the men” or “at the time and moment the male human beings sent by John the Baptist” “were come unto him” which means “”, “they said” or “the men uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “John Baptist” which means “John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver and was known as the Baptist because he submerged and immersed people in water as a symbol of being dead to their sins” “has sent us unto you” or “has discharged and directed the men to go to Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how the men John the Baptist dispatched to Jesus asked Him the following questions.

The verse goes on to say, “... Are you he that should come? or look we for another?” Luke continued with the words, “are you he” which means “are you Jesus the Messiah and Christ” “that should come” or “who is to arise and appear”? “Or look we” which means “or should John and the men sent to Jesus to search, wait and expect” “for another” or “for an other person to be the Messiah and Christ”. Luke shared how the men sent to Jesus by John the Baptist asked Him if He was the “One” they were expecting to be the Messiah or should they be “hoping and waiting for” another person.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how these men did as John the Baptist instructed them as they asked Jesus whether He was the “Messiah of God” or not. They were willing to begin “looking for” another person to be the Christ is Jesus was not. They were simply expressed John's wonder and doubt as he was not totally convinced that Jesus was the Messiah at this point. John was in prison, and things were not working out the way he thought they would. God's plans do not always align with ours, and even though there may be “doubt” like John as to whether Jesus is the Messiah or not, those who are wise will believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” who is aware of whatever a person needs.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “in that same hour” “cured many of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
