Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus, “lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are you poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are you that weep now: for you shall laugh. Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice you in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. But woe unto you that are rich! for you have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for you shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for you shall mourn and weep”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shares how Jesus said, “woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you” where we read:
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
The verse reads, “Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you!” Luke began with the words, “woe unto you” or “alas to the people whether male or female”, “when all men shall speak well” which means “at the time and moment each, every, the whole and everyone will say, bid, bring word and tell beautifully, fine, excellently, nobly, commendably and honorably” “of you” or “pertaining to a person whether male or female”. Luke shared how Jesus warned people when others “say” good things about them.
The verse continues, “for so did their fathers to the false prophets.” Luke added the words, “for so did their fathers” which means “because, since and on account that this was according to the same execution and performance of the male generators or ancestors” “to the false prophets” or “toward the ones who were acting the part of a divinely inspired prophet and uttered falsehoods under the name of divine prophecies”. Luke shared how Jesus said the fore-fathers of people spoke “well” of “false prophets” in the same manner they would “speak well” of them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus warned the crowd of people against the times when “everybody” “says” good things about them. He told them the fore-fathers of those who spoke “well” of them previously gave praise to and said good things about “false prophets”. Not everyone who “speaks well” of a person are truthful in their “praise”, and Jesus instructed those listening to be warned. God desires a genuine relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will speak the “truth” about them. Rather than seeking the “praise” of others, the person who submits their life to Jesus will seek to be pleasing to Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “love your enemies, do good to them which hate you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
