Jesus Acknowledges the Woman Anointed His Feet - Luke 7:46

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus told Simon the Pharisee, “There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, You have rightly judged. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, See you this woman? I entered into your house, you gave me no water for my feet: but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. You gave me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in has not ceased to kiss my feet, and in chapter seven and verse forty-six of his book Luke shared the woman, “has anointed my feet with ointment” where we read:

My head with oil you did not anoint: but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment.

The verse reads, “My head with oil you did not anoint:” Luke began with the words, “My head with oil” or “Jesus' physical head with anointing oil” “you did not anoint” which means “Simon, you did not place upon Jesus' head like perfume”. Luke shared how Jesus told Simon he did not “anoint” His head when He entered Simon's home.

The verse goes on to say, “but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment.” Luke continued with the words, “but this woman” which means “however, nonetheless and notwithstanding the woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears and hair” “has anointed my feet” or “put anointing oil or perfume upon Jesus' physical feet” “with ointment” which means “with perfumed oil”. Luke shared how Jesus acknowledged the way the woman “anointed” His feet with “perfumed oil”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus acknowledge the efforts of this “sinful” woman who Simon thought was unworthy for Jesus to touch. Jesus reminded Simon of the lack of “anointing oil” offered to Him upon entrance into Simon's home, but He made note of the special way the woman “anointed” His feet with “perfumed oil”. Anointing oil was used as a “perfume” for the person who traveled as an agent not only for the soothing of skin, but also as a fragrant aroma much more pleasing than normal body odor. Jesus knew this woman spent her “perfumed oil” upon Him because she worshiped and adored Him, and His value was great in her heart. Simon did not even offer “anointing oil” when Jesus came into His home. People who have recognized who Jesus really is, the Messiah, Christ and Son of God, desire to “anoint” Him with their “perfumed oil” of worship, and He is willing to receive and acknowledge everyone who submits themselves to Him in this manner.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus declares about the woman, “her sins, which are many, are forgiven”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
