The Devil Who Neither Eats Bread or Drinks Wine - Luke 7:33

Luke the beloved physician how the Lord Jesus asked, “Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and you have not wept”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine” where we read:

For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say, He has a devil.

The verse reads, “For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine;” Luke began with the words, “For John the Baptist” or “because, since and on account that John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver and who baptized people in water” “came neither eating bread” which means “arose, appeared and made entrance to the people without consuming and devouring food composed of flour and water and baked” “nor drinking wine” or “nor imbibing the fruit of the vine which was made into wine”. Luke shared how Jesus spoke of “John the Baptist's” refusal to “eat” of regular food and “drink” “wine”.

The verse continues, “and you say, He has a devil.” Luke added the words, “and you say” which means “and the religious leaders uttered, declared and proclaimed that”, “he has a devil” or “John the Baptist was holden by, possessed and closely joined to an evil spirit or messenger and minister of the devil”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “religious leaders” determined “John the Baptist” was possessed by an “evil spirit”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the judgment of the “religious leaders” was altered by their hard hearted condition. Because they would not believe in John the Baptist nor Jesus, they made conclusions about them that were not true. There are none so blind and those who will not see, and even though John the Baptist was the fore-runner to the Messiah and Jesus was the Christ of God, these “stiff necked” “Pharisees and lawyers” were in error and wrong. Many sit upon judgment seats in their hearts today, and the question presented to them is as follows: “Is Jesus Christ the Messiah and Son of God or not?”. Those who believe and trust in Jesus will be saved, and those who do not will not only have judge Jesus inaccurately, but will have also judged themselves worthy of separation from God for all eternity.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and you say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a winebibber”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
