What Might This Parable Be? - Luke 8:9

Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said, “A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that has ears to hear, let him hear”, and in chapter eight and verse nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “what might this parable be?” where we read:

And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?

The verse reads, “And his disciples asked him, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus' disciples” or “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “asked him” which means “inquired and questioned Jesus”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus' “disciples” began to ask Him the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... What might this parable be?” Luke continued with the words, “what might” which means “what precisely or exactly does ” “this parable be” or “this earthly story with a heavenly meaning mean”? Luke shared how Jesus' “disciples” wanted to Him to interpret this “parable” for them.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples knew there was a “meaning” behind this story of Jesus, and because they asked Him to explain it, they revealed their lack of understanding it. Jesus desired for His disciples to know the “spiritual” or “heavenly” meanings behind His stories, and when His disciples asked Him to explain them, He shared with them. God desires for all people to come to Him with interest in the principles of His Kingdom, and when they do not understand what He says, those who yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” have made the first step to comprehending Kingdom principles like they never have before.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
