Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said, “A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that has ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?”, and in chapter eight and verse ten of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God” where we read:
And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God:
but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
The verse reads, “And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God:” Luke began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Unto you” which means “to you Jesus' disciples” “it is given to know” or “the knowledge, perception and understanding is granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied to Jesus' disciples” “the mysteries” which means “the hidden things and secrets” “of the kingdom of God” or “pertaining to the royal power, kingship, dominion and rule belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how Jesus said His disciples were “granted” the ability to “perceive and understand” the “secrets” pertaining to “God's Kingdom”.
The verse continues, “but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.” Luke added the words, “but to others” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover toward people other than Jesus' disciples” “in parables” or “in earthly stories with heavenly meanings”; “that seeing that they might not see” which means “so discerning and perceiving they will not perceive and understand”, “and hearing” or “and being given the faculty to hear, perceive and comprehend” “they might not understand” which means “those who are not Jesus' disciples will not perceive or understand”. Luke shared how Jesus said He would speak in “parables” to people who were not His disciples, so even though they see and hear what He says, they will not understand the true meanings behind His words.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we understand the importance of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Without that relationship, a person may say, “I just don't get it”, and they don't. The principles of the Kingdom of God were shared by Jesus, but many listening to Him “just didn't get it” either. God's desire is to share the “mysteries” or “secrets” of His Kingdom with everyone who will yield their lives to His Son Jesus, and when they humble themselves and submit to Him, He will open their understanding to the principles of His Kingdom they have never understood before.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the seed is the word of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
