Luke the beloved physician wrote about Jesus, “And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people”, and in chapter seven and verse twelve of his book Luke shared about, “a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother” where we read:
Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
The verse reads, “Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow:” Luke began with the words, “now when he came near to the gate of the city” or “moreover and at the time and moment Jesus approached the leaf or wing of a folding entrance of the village of Nain”, “behold” which means “lo, look and consider”, “there was a dead man carried out” or “there appeared a male human being who had breathed his last, expired and without life being borne forth for burial”, “the only son of his mother” which means “the man was the sole male progeny and offspring of his female direct ancestor”, “and she was a widow” or “and the son's mother was also a woman whose husband had died”. Luke shared as Jesus entered through the “gate” of the city of “Nain”, He was met by men who were “carrying out for burial” the dead body of a “widow's son”.
The verse goes on to say, “and much people of the city was with her.” Luke continued with the words, “and much people” which means “and a large and massive group of people both male and female” “of the city” or “belonging to the village of Nain” “was with her” which means “were alongside the widow”. Luke shared how there were “many people” who walked alongside the “widow” whose son was dead.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover another story of human tragedy Jesus encountered. The woman Jesus met as He entered the “gate” or “entrance point” of the “city of Nain” already experienced the “death” of her husband, and now her “only son” was dead. We can only imagine the grief this woman was experiencing, and more than likely all “hope” was gone from her as well. However, Jesus was on His way, and she met Him. God sent His Son Jesus into a world that was filled with troubles and difficulties, and troubles continue today. The only hope this widow had was standing before her in Jesus Christ, and if it is truly thought through, Jesus is the only hope for the world today. Those who are wise will not only encounter Jesus, but will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they do, they will have submitted themselves to the answer to all their problems from now until eternity.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “had compassion on her, and said unto her, weep not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
