The beloved physician Luke wrote how a certain lawyer asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “a Levite … passed by on the other side” where we read:
And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place,
came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
The verse reads, “And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, ...” Luke began with the words, “and likewise a Levite” or “and in the same manner and likeness a member of the tribe of Levi who was in a narrower sense those were called Levites who, not being of the family of Aaron, for whom alone the priesthood was reserved, served as assistants to the priests”, “when he was at the place” which means “at the time and moment the Levite was in the location where the man was beaten and robbed”. Luke shared how a member of the “Levites” was in the same location as the man who was robbed, beaten and left for dead.
The verse goes on to say, “... came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.” Luke continued with the words, “came and looked on him” which means “arose and approached and observed, beheld and noticed the man who was robbed”, “and passed by” or “and went along” “on the other side” which means “on the opposite side of the traveled road”. Luke shared how the “Levite” approached where the man who was robbed lay, saw him and went by him on the other side of the road.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another “religious leader” who saw the man who was robbed, beaten and left for dead. This time it was a “Levite”, who was responsible for the physical elements within the temple, who “passed by” the man without helping him. Perhaps he was “too busy” or “had an appointment” or “meeting”, and did not want to take the time to help him. Whatever his reason, he did not give aid to the man who was hurting. God observes the condition of every person, and He wants them to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. Those who yield their lives to Him will will be forgiven of their sins, inherit everlasting life and learn to look upon others and help those who are in need.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “a certain Samaritan … had compassion on him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
