The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked the lawyer, “what is written in the law?” where we read:
He said unto him, What is written in the law? how do you read it?
The verse reads, “He said unto him, What is written in the law?” Luke began with the words, “He said unto him” or “Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the lawyer”, “what is written” which means “what is delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “in the law” or “within the rule, precept, injunction or state approved of God”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the lawyer as to what was “written” within the “law of God”.
The verse goes on to say, “how do you read it?” Luke continued with the words, “how do you” which means “in what way and manner did the lawyer” “read it” or “distinguish between, recognize, know accurately and acknowledge what was written in the law”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the “lawyer” as to how he “recognized” and “understood” what was “written in the law”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus responded to the lawyer's question with a question. Rather than simply answer him, Jesus asked the man what he “read” in the “law”. Jesus was not to be “tried” without controlling the situation or using it for a teaching moment, and because God wants to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus Christ, when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” rather than “questioning and trying” Him, they shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks the lawyer, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart … soul … strength … and mind”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
