The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-two of his book Luke shared how, “Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep” where we read:
But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake,
they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
The verse reads, “But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep:” Luke began with the words, “But Peter” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus' disciple Peter whose name means a little rock or stone” “and they that were with him” which means “and James and John who accompanied Jesus” “were heavy with sleep” or “were burdened, weighed and pressed down with sleepiness”: “and when they were awake” which means “and at the time and moment Jesus' disciples were fully and thoroughly wakened”. Luke made reference to how Jesus' disciples “Peter, James and John” were very sleepy
The verse goes on to say, “ and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.” Luke added the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “they were awake” which means “Jesus' disciples were fully and thoroughly wakened”, “they saw his glory” which means “Peter, James and John observed, noticed, discovered and discerned”, “and the two men that stood with him” or “and the two male human beings, Moses and Elijah”, who were standing with Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus's disciples, Peter, James and John, woke up and saw Him in His glorified body as well as “Moses and Elijah” standing with Him.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter, James and John” fell asleep while Jesus was being transfigured before them. Once they awoke, Jesus' disciples saw Him, Moses and Elijah in their glorified bodies standing together. Oh what a sight this must have been, and we can only imagine the reaction of “Peter, James and John” as they awoke to see this sight. Jesus entered the “spiritual” world in advance of His death to speak with “Moses and Elijah”, and those who are wise will consider this significant event in the life of Jesus and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “Master, it is good for us to be here”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
