The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “ the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house”, and in chapter ten and verse six of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “if the son of peace be there , your peace shall rest upon it” where we read:
And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
The verse reads, “And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it:” Luke began with the words, “and if the son of peace be there” or “and whether the calmness and tranquility is within the people whether male or female surely, truly and certainly in that house”, “your peace” which means “Jesus' disciples calmness and tranquility” “shall rest upon it” or “will settle, fix and be set upon that house as well”. Luke shared how Jesus told His “seventy disciples” when they spoke “peace” upon a house, if the people within the house were “tranquil and calm”, their “peace” would be and remain upon it.
The verse continues, “if not, it shall turn to you again.” Luke added the words, “if not” which means “whether and in case there is not peace within the people in the house”, “it shall turn to you again” or “the disciples' peace would return to them”. Luke shared how Jesus said if the people within the home were not “calm and tranquil”, the disciples” “peace” would return to them.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see what happens to the “peace” Jesus' “seventy disciples” spoke upon a house they entered. If there was “peace” within that house, the disciples' “peace” would remain. However, if there was not “peace” within that home, the disciples' “peace” would return to them. God sent His Son Jesus into the “troubled world” that He might bring “peace”. As the angels declared in their pronouncement to the shepherds, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men”. (See Luke 2:14). Those who submit their lives to Jesus Christ will not only be forgiven of their sins but will also receive the “peace” of God that goes beyond understanding. Let all who read these words receive the “Prince of Peace”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the laborer is worthy of his hire”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
