Careful and Troubled about Many Things - Luke 10:41

The beloved physician Luke wrote how concerning Jesus and His disciples, “it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me”, and in chapter ten and verse forty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things” where we read:

And Jesus answered and said unto her,

Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things:

The verse reads, “And Jesus answered and said unto her, ...” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus answered” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak” “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto her” or “to Martha” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to respond to Martha by saying the next words.

The verse continues, “... Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things:” Luke added the words, “Martha, Martha” which means “she was rebellious, she was rebellious”, “you are careful” or “you, Martha, take thought and are anxious” “and troubled” which means “and disturbed, troubled in mind and disquieted” “about many things” or “concerning a lot and large amount of activities”. Luke shared how Jesus repeated “Martha's” name twice for emphasis and told her she was “anxious and troubled in mind” with a lot of activities.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus identified the situation in Martha. She was consumed with “doing” things. There are many “doers” in this world, and their desire like Martha's is to be acknowledged with what they do. Jesus will speak more to Martha's activities in our next verse , however, suffice it for now to know He has another way for people to be. God loves everyone, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who yield to Him and His way will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Performance and activities are not the “best” way to minister to the Lord.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Mary has chosen that good part, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
