The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “ the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again”, and in chapter ten and verse seven of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “the laborer is worthy of his hire” where we read:
And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give:
for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
The verse reads, “And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give:” Luke began with the words, “and in the same house” or “and within the selfsame habitation, dwelling place and residence” “remain” which means “abide, tarry and do not depart”, “eating an drinking” or “consuming, devouring and imbibing” “such things as they give” which means “from that or whatever the people within the house grant, bestow, supply and furnish to the disciples”. Luke shared how His disciples were to “stay” within the homes they entered and receive whatever the people gave them to “eat and drink”.
The verse goes on to say, “for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.” Luke continued with the words, “for the laborer” which means “because, since and on account that the worker, toiler or teacher” “is worthy of his hire” or “is befitting, congruous and due their wages, rewards and pay”. “Go not from house to house” which means “Jesus' disciples were not to travel and journey from one dwelling place, habitation or abode to another”. Luke shared how Jesus said His “disciples – workers” were “due” their “wages”, and they were not to “journey” from one house to another within a certain area.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus affirmed the “wages” of His “disciples” when they were about their travels. The “minister” needs to be compensated for His work in the Kingdom of God. These “wages” are not to be “abused”, and the “disciple of Jesus” is to “receive” whatever is given to him. God insures those who “minister” the gospel of His Kingdom that they shall be cared for in this world, and they will receive “everlasting” rewards in the Kingdom of Heaven. Those who are wise will be like these disciples and not only receive God's Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, but will also be used by Him to tell others God's “good news” of salvation.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “eat such things as are set before you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
