The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, will you that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, You know not what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “a certain man said unto” Jesus, “Lord, I will follow you wherever you go” where we read:
And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him,
Lord, I will follow you whithersoever you go.
The verse reads, “And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him,” Luke began with the words, “And it came to pass” or “and it happened or came into existence” “that, as they went in the way” which means “that while and during the time Jesus and His disciples journeyed and traveled along the path or roadway”, “a certain man” or “a particular male human being” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus and His disciples” the following words. Luke shared while Jesus and His disciples journeyed, a particular man approached them and uttered the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “Lord, I will follow you whithersoever you go.” Luke added the word, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “I will follow you” or “I will join, accompany and side with you Jesus and your party” “whithersoever you go” which means “in whatever place to which Jesus departs”. Luke shared how the man pledged to “join and accompany” Jesus to any place He travels.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how this man not only met Jesus and His disciples while they were traveling, but he made a bold statement to Him concerning his destiny. He promised to “go with” Jesus to any place He traveled. Many people make a promise to align themselves with Jesus, but when it comes to personal sacrifice, they have often spoken empty words. God desires to have a personal relationship with everyone, and when they submit themselves to His Son Jesus, He gives them access to Him. Those who are wise will yield themselves completely to Him, and allow Him to supply any lack they have in complying.
Next time Luke shares how, “foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has not where to lay his head”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
