More Tolerable Judgment for Tyre and Sidon - Luke 10:14

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be you sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. Woe unto you, Chorazin! woe unto you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes”, and in chapter ten and verse fourteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you” where we read:

But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

The verse reads, “But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, ... Luke began with the words, “but it shall be more tolerable” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the judgment will be more bearable” “for Tyre” which means “toward and among the people of Tyre which means a rock and was a Phoenician city on the Mediterranean, very ancient, large, splendid, flourishing in commerce, and powerful by land and sea” “and Sidon” or “and the people of Sidon which means hunting and was an ancient and wealthy city of Phoenicia located on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea less than 20 miles (30 km) north of Tyre” “at the judgment” which means “in the presence of the separating, sundering, trial and tribunal”. Luke shared how Jesus said the cities of “Tyre and Sidon” will find the “judgment” of God more “bearable” than the following.

The verse continues, “... than for you.” Luke added the words, “than” which means “rather and save” “for you” or “on the city's behalf”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “city” who rejected Him and God's Kingdom will have it much worse on the day of “judgment” than “Tyre and Sidon”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we understand there will be a day of reckoning for the people of cities who “receive” Jesus and for those who don't. The judgment of God was pronounced upon “Tyre and Sidon” in the Old Testament, however, Jesus said they would have “repented” if they saw the miracles He performed. Those who examine the words and miracles of Jesus have the same opportunity to either “receive” or “reject” Jesus as the Messiah of the world. Those who accept Him will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God, and those who do not will face a “judgment” that is greater than the one pronounced upon “Tyre and Sidon”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus speaks about, “Capernaum”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
