The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared how, “a man of the company cried out … look upon my son” where we read:
And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying,
Master, I beseech you, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
The verse reads, “And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and, behold” or “and look, see and consider”, “a man of the company” which means “a male human being within the crowd of people”, “cried out” or “raised a halloo or loud cry”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how a “man” within the crowd who met Jesus shouted out to Him the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... Master, I beseech you, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.” Luke continued with the word, “Master” which means “teacher or instructor”, “I beseech you” or “I beg, plead, desire and petition you Jesus to”, “look upon my son” which means “turn your eyes upon, regard and have respect to the man's progeny or offspring”: “for he is mine only child” or “because, since and on account that the man's Son is his sole offspring or progeny”. Luke shared how the man within the crowd pled for Jesus to attend to his “son” because he was his only “offspring”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another person in need. This man was in the group of people who “met” Jesus when He descended from the mountain, and he needed help with his only child who was his son. He came to Jesus because He believed Jesus could attend to his need. God loves people to come to His Son Jesus, and as their personal “Savior and Lord” He is able to give them aid and assistance with whatever they need.
Next time Luke shares how the man tells Jesus, “a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
