Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech you, look upon my son: for he is mine only child”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shared how the man tells Jesus, “a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out” where we read:
And, lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it tears him that he foams again, and bruising him hardly departs from him.
The verse reads, “And, lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out;” Luke began with the words, “and, lo” or “and behold and see”, “a spirit takes him” which means “an evil, wicked and unclean essence which is devoid of all or at least all grosser matter who possesses the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”, “and he suddenly cries out” or “and the man's son unexpectedly shouts aloud, croaks and vociferates”. Luke shared how the man told Jesus an “evil spirit” overcomes his “son” which caused the boy to “shout aloud”.
The verse continues, “and it tears him that he foams again, and bruising him hardly departs from him.” Luke added the words, “and it tears him” which means “and the evil spirit convulses his son with epilepsy” “that he foams again” or “so the son froths and slavers from his mouth”, “and bruising him” which means “and the breaking, crushing and shattering of his son to pieces in shivers” “hardly departs from him” or “with difficulty separates and goes away from the boy”. Luke shared how the man told Jesus when the “evil spirit” takes over his son it causes the boy to “froth at the mouth and convulse in an epileptic fit” that rarely leaves him.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about why the man sought help from Jesus. The man's son was overtaken by an “evil spirit” that cause him to “shout aloud, have convulsive fits and foam at the mouth”. This “spirit” did not leave the boy, and the man was desperate for help. God knows the needs of every person, and because He desires a personal relationship with everyone, He sent His Son Jesus to help them with their “spiritual and physical” needs. Those who are wise seek Jesus who is able to provide for any of their difficult situations.
Next time Luke shares how the man tells Jesus, “I besought your disciples to cast him out; and they could not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
