Give Us Our Daily Bread - Luke 11:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” Jesus answered, “When you pray, say, Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, as in heaven, so in earth”, and in chapter eleven and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus continued by saying, “Give us day by day our daily bread.” where we read:

Give us day by day our daily bread.

The verse reads, “Give us day by day ...” Luke began with the words, “Give us” or “grant, bestow, furnish and supply to us – (which again is plural)” “day by day” which means “from each space of twenty four hours to each twenty four hours ”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples to ask God the Father to provide for them the following sustenance each and every day.

The verse continues, “... our daily bread.” Luke added the words, “our daily” or “our (which again is plural) each and every day” “bread” or “needful subsistence and food”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His disciples to ask God the Father to provide their “sustenance” and “food” for each and every day.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told His disciples to ask for their “daily provisions” as they included each other in their prayers. God the Father knows people are in need of “food, water, shelter and clothing”, and He is able to provide them each and every day. By acknowledging the source of “our” “subsistence”, we align ourselves with Jesus' prayer, and we shall find that requesting from God the Father that which He desires to provide will align us with His passion to care for our physical needs.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus continues by saying, “forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
