The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how do you read it? And he answering said, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus responded, “you have answered right: this do, and you shall live” where we read:
And he said unto him, you have answered right: this do, and you shall live.
The verse reads, “And he said unto him, you have answered right:” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto him” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the lawyer”, “you have answered right” which means “you, lawyer, have responded and spoken plainly and correctly”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “lawyer” that he responded “correctly”.
The verse goes on to say, “this do, and you shall live.” Luke added the words, “this do” which means “this, which means love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind and love your neighbor as yourself”, “and you shall live” or “and whosoever does so will receive and inherit eternal life”. Luke shared how Jesus told the lawyer if he would “love God with all his heart, soul, strength and mind and love his neighbor as himself”, he would receive “everlasting life”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus not only affirmed what the “lawyer” said, but challenged him with the condition of performing the very words of the “law” to which he referred. Loving God and loving people fulfills the law of God, and because people have violated them, Jesus came to rescue them from their inability to keep His laws. Jesus died upon the cross to save people from their sins so they could live with God forever, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and allow Him to help them keep His laws.
Next time Luke shares how the lawyer asks, “who is my neighbor?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
