The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “ the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves”, and in chapter ten and verse four of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way” where we read:
Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
The verse reads, “Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes:” Luke began with the word, “carry neither purse” or “do not take or bear money or a bag”, “nor script” which means “not a wallet or leather sack in which travelers and shepherd carried their provisions”, “nor shoes” or “not any sandals with soles which are fastened to the foot with thongs”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His “seventy” disciples not to take money, wallets or leather sacks or sandals” with them on their journey.
The verse continues, “and salute no man by the way.” Luke added the words, “and salute no man” which means “and greet, bid welcome, wish well to and receive joyfully not one person whether male or female” “by the way” or “along their journey or traveled path”. Luke shared how Jesus also told His “seventy” disciples they should not “greet or wish well to” anyone as they traveled.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus sent out His “disciples” without any extra provisions for their personal use. They were to learn to depend upon God for all their needs, and the Lord would “supply all their need according to his riches in glory” (See Philippians 4:19). God loves people and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will not only call them to serve, but will also provide for them as they do.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
