The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “ the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you”, and in chapter ten and verse ten of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells His disciples, “into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out” where we read:
But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not,
go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
The verse reads, “But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, ...” Luke began with the words, “but into whatsoever city” or “however, nonetheless and notwithstanding in whatever town, village or dwelling place” “you enter” which means “the disciples made entrance or came into”, “and they receive you not” or “and the people of that city reject and refuse Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus began to tell His disciples what they were to do with people within a city who reject and do not accept them.
The verse continues, “... go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,” Luke added Jesus' words, “go your ways out” which means “depart and go forth” “into the streets of the same” or “into the broad way or traveled road of the city”, “and say” which means “and utter, declare and proclaim” the words in the next verse. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples to “go out” into the city's “traveled road” and proclaim the words He says in the next verse.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how not all people would “receive” Jesus' disciples, and Jesus told them what to do when this occurs. God loves everyone, however, He knows not all people will receive the message of His Kingdom provided through His Son Jesus. Though this is true, the message of God's Kingdom still goes forth. Those who are wise will receive Jesus Christ and God's gospel through Him and not be as those who reject Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples to tell the people of the rejecting city, “Even the very dust of your city, which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
