The beloved physician Luke wrote how concerning Jesus and His disciples, “it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things”, and in chapter ten and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “Mary has chosen that good part” where we read:
But one thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part,
which shall not be taken away from her.
The verse reads, “But one thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part, ...” Luke began with the words, “but one thing is needful” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a single, certain and primary activity exists as necessary, duty and business”: “and Mary” which means “and Mary, whose name means their rebellion” “has chosen that good part” or “has picked, selected and made a choice for that useful, salutary, pleasant, agreeable, joyful and happy portion or share”. Luke shared how Jesus told Martha there was “one particular activity” that was necessary, and that her sister “Mary” made a choice toward the “superior” portion.
The verse goes on to say, “... which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke continued with the words, “which shall not be taken away” or “that will not removed or carried off” “from her” or “separate from Mary”. Luke shared how Jesus told Martha the way her sister Mary chose would not be removed from her.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus elevated the way Mary acted over the activity of Martha. Martha was busy preparing a meal, and Mary was seated at Jesus' feet listening to His words. God knows the activities of people, and His desire is to have a personal relations with them through His Son Jesus. When they “sit at His feet”, not only will they learn Jesus' ways, but they will also be choosing the “good part” that shall never be “taken away” from them.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share how Jesus was, “praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
