The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves. For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give to him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give to him as many as he needs”, and in chapter eleven and verse nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus said to, “ask … seek” and … “knock” where we read:
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you;
seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
The verse reads, “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you;” Luke began with the words, “and I say unto you” or “and I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to His disciples” “ask” which means “beg, crave, desire and require”, “and it shall be given you” or “and what you beg, crave, desire and require will be granted, bestowed, supplied and furnished to Jesus' disciple”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His disciples to “crave” and “desire” what they wanted from God, and He would “supply and furnish” it to them.
The verse continues, “seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” Luke added the word, “seek” or “aim at, strive after, demand and endeavor”, “and you shall find” or “and Jesus' disciple would come and hit upon, discover, understand and detect what they are looking for”; “knock” which means “rap on the door”, “and it shall be opened to you” or “and the door will stand wide open to Jesus' disciple”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples when they “strive for and endeavor to have” something, they would discover it, and when they “rapped” upon the “door”, the “door” would “stand wide open” for them.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus instructed His disciples to “ask, seek and knock” and each of them implied persistence. The were to “keep on asking, keep on seeking and keep on knocking” and their answers would come. God loves people to be unrelenting in their pursuit of what they desire, and when they come to God in humility and yield to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” they may “ask, seek and knock” for anything they need.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says to, “every one that asks receives … seeks finds” and “knocks it shall be opened”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
