The beloved physician Luke wrote how a certain lawyer asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever you spend more, when I come again, I will repay you. Which now of these three, do you think, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do you likewise”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared concerning Jesus that, “a certain woman named Martha received him into her house” where we read:
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village:
and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
The verse reads, “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village:” Luke began with the words, “Now it came to pass” or “at that time it happened and came into existence”, “as they went” which means “and Jesus and His disciples traveled and journeyed”, “that he entered into a certain village” or “that Jesus approached and made entrance into a particular town, habitation or dwelling place for the laborers in the fields”. Luke shared how Jesus and His disciples came into a particular town.
The verse goes on to say, “and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.” Luke added the words, “and a certain woman” which means “and a particular female human being” “named Martha” or “whose name means she was rebellious and was the sister of Lazarus and Mary of Bethany” “received him into her house” which means “accepted, admitted and entertained hospitably under her roof and home”. Luke shared how there was a particular “woman” whose name was “Martha” accepted into her home.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover another event in the life of Jesus and His disciples. This time He and His disciples entered into another “village”, most likely Bethany, where they were “received” into the home of a woman named “Martha”. We shall learn more about “Martha” in the next few verses, but let it suffice us to know Jesus had “friends” who allowed Him into their lives and homes. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, not only will He come into their lives but He will also forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life that allows them to live in His house forever.
Next time Luke shares how Martha, “had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
