Nothing to Set Before Him - Luke 11:6

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves”, and in chapter eleven and verse six of his book Luke shared how Jesus continues by saying the friend says, “I have nothing to set before him?” where we read:

For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

The verse reads, “For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, ...” Luke began with the words, “for a friend of mine” or “because, since and on account that a familiar companion and associate of the disciple asking” “in his journey” which means “within the friend's travels and departure” “is come to me” or “has arose and appeared to the disciple and is asking for bread”. Luke shared how Jesus continued with His story as He gave the reason for the “disciple” asking for bread as He told of a “familiar associate and companion” visiting him during a journey.

The verse goes on to say, “... and I have nothing to set before him?” Luke continued with the words, “and I have nothing to set” or “and the disciple asking for bread did not have any to put, place and give” “before him” or “in front and in the presence of the friend”? Luke shared how the disciple in Jesus' example declared that he did not have anything with which to feed his “friend”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn more of Jesus' illustration as He provided the reason a “disciple” would ask a “friend” for “bread” at “midnight”. Someone came to visit this “disciple” in the middle of the night, and he did not have food to give to his “friend”. In other words, the disciple in Jesus' story was in need. Because he desired to feed his friend, he was bold to ask his neighbor for “bread”. God loves people to relate to Him through His Son Jesus and “come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (See Hebrews 4:16), and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him and come to God with whatever they are needing.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus continues by saying the friend says, “trouble me not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
