Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. While he thus spoke, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared, “when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone” where we read:
And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
The verse reads, “And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone.” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “the voice was past” which means “the sound and tone of uttered words was finished and completed”, “Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “was found alone” which means “was discovered and seen to be by Himself”. Luke shared after God finished speaking Jesus was by Himself.
The verse goes on to say, “And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.” Luke continued with the words, “and they kept it close” which means “and Jesus' disciples Peter, James and John concealed, were silent and kept quiet about what they saw on the mountain”, “and told no man in those days” or “and did not bring tidings to, make known or proclaim to anyone at that time” “any of those things” which means “nothing of the events and happenings upon the mountain” “which they had seen” or “that Peter, James and John saw”. Luke shared how Peter, James and John disclosed to no one what they saw upon the mountain with Jesus.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn what happened as soon as God finished making His declaration about His Son Jesus. Jesus was then “alone” because Moses and Elijah were not longer with Him. These events were “tell-worthy”, but Peter, James and John did not speak of them. We are told by the apostle Matthew, “And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.” (See Matthew 17:9), and Jesus' disciples complied. God has His timing for all things, and Jesus was abiding by God's plan for the “salvation” of mankind. His desire is to be in a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and Jesus has allowed the revelation of this mountain top experience to everyone who will yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how, “the next day … much people met him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
