Jesus Appoints Seventy Others - Luke 10:1

Luke the beloved physician wrote about Jesus and His disciples, “ it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow you whithersoever you go. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has not where to lay his head. And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God”, and in chapter ten and verse one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place” where we read:

After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come.

The verse reads, “After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, ... Luke began with the words, “and these things” or “when Jesus finished speaking to the men who told Him they would follow Him” “the Lord appointed” which means “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah announced, proclaimed and constituted” “other seventy also” or “another seventy disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus chose another “seventy” disciples to do the following.

The verse goes on to say, “... and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come.” Luke continued with the words, “and sent them two and two” which means “and Jesus had them depart and leave two and two together” “before his face” or “in advance and within the presence of Jesus countenance and appearance” “into every city and place” which means “into each, all, the whole and everyone of the habitations, dwelling places and towns”, “where he himself would come” or “where Jesus Himself would arrive and appear”. Luke shared how Jesus had these “seventy” disciples go to “towns and villages” in advance of Him appearing in them.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the close followers of Jesus was growing at this time in His ministry. Rather than His original twelve disciples, Jesus now appointed “seventy” others who were to share the “Kingdom of God” “two” at a time with others. These disciples were commissioned to proclaim God's Kingdom to villages and town in advance of Jesus appearing in them. God loves people to join His Kingdom through a relationship with His Son Jesus, and when a person submits their life to Him, He will “appoint” them to tell others about Him and His Father's rule.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
