The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus sent His disciple to heal people and to share with them the Kingdom of God. He said, “into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaves on us, we do wipe off against you:notwithstanding be you sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you”, and in chapter ten and verse twelve of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells His disciples, “it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city” where we read:
But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
The verse reads, “But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, ...” Luke began with the words, “but I say unto you” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to the people”, “that it shall be more tolerable” which means “it will be more endurable and bearable” “in that day” or “in the time of judgment” “for Sodom” which means “for the city whose name means burning and was destroyed by the Lord raining fire and brimstone upon it”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “judgment” upon the “city of Sodom” would be more tolerable than the following.
The verse continues, “... than for that city.” Luke added the words, “than” which means “rather or save” “for that city” or “on behalf of the town, village or dwelling place who rejects Jesus”. Luke shared how the judgment of God will be more bearable for the “city of Sodom” than for the “city” who rejects Jesus Christ and His “gospel” of the “Kingdom of God”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told His disciples the “city” who did not accept Him and the gospel of the Kingdom of God would be judged more harshly than the “city of Sodom” who was destroyed by fire and brimstone. (See Genesis 19). When we consider how harsh the judgment was upon “Sodom” who rejected God, we can only imagine how unbearable the judgment will be upon people who refuse to receive Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Second Corinthians chapter six and verse two says, “now is the day of salvation”, and those who are wise will receive Jesus and never need to know the judgment of God that will be greater than “Sodom's”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Woe unto you, Chorazin! woe unto you, Bethsaida! ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
