The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus, “turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see. For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear, and have not heard them”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shared how, “a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him” where we read:
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying,
Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
The verse reads, “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and, behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “a certain lawyer” which means “a particular one who was learned and served as an interpreter of the Mosaic law” “stood up” or “raised up from a seated position”, “and tempted him” which means “and tested and proved Jesus”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asking” the following question. Luke shared how a particular person, who was “trained in” and “taught” the “law of God”, raised from His seated position and asked Jesus the following question.
The verse continues, “... Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Luke added the word, “Master” which means “teacher and instructor”, “what shall I do” or “what is it that the lawyer needs to perform, produce or make ready” “to inherit” which means “to receive by lot, obtain by right and be an heir of” “eternal life” or “everlasting or without beginning and ending vitality, animation and absolute fullness of life”? Luke shared how the lawyer asked Jesus what he was to “do” so that he might “receive and become an heir” of “everlasting life”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another person who “tried and tempted” Jesus. This time a “lawyer” questioned Him as to what he needed to do to “inherit” everlasting life. Jesus will answer Him in the next verse, however, for now let us allow the “lawyer's” question be ours. What must we “do to inherit eternal life”? God sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of the world, and those who believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and “inherit” everlasting life. Let all who read these words understand and believe.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks the lawyer, “what is written in the law?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
