The beloved physician Luke wrote, “Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners, and eats with them”, and in chapter fifteen and verse three of his book Luke wrote how Jesus began to speak, “this parable unto them” where we read:
And he spoke this parable unto them, saying, ...
The verse reads, “And he spoke ...” Luke began with the words, “And he” or “and Jesus” “spoke” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following. Luke shared how Jesus responded to the “Pharisees” and “scribe's” criticism with the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... this parable unto them, saying, ...” Luke continued with the words, “this parable” or “this earthly story with a heavenly meaning” “unto them” which means “to the Pharisees and scribes”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the words in the next verse. Luke shared how Jesus began to share another “earthly story with a heavenly meaning” with the religious leaders.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus responded to the “indignant complaining” of the “religious leaders”. Rather than just “ignore” them, Jesus began to share another “parable” with them. God loves people, and even when they question His purposes and plan, He is willing to help them understand the principles of His Kingdom. Those who are wise will carefully study God's word for clarity to their suspicions and dismiss any misunderstanding of His ways.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
