Beginning to Build and Unable to Finish - Luke 14:30

Luke the beloved physician wrote about Jesus, “there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sits not down first, and counts the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, ...”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke shared how Jesus declares people will say, “this man began to build, and was not able to finish” where we read:

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

The verse reads, “Saying, This man began to build, ...” Luke began with the word, “Saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “this man began” which means “the male human being who was a builder started and initiated” “to build” or “to construct and erect a tower”. Luke shared how Jesus said the people who were mocking the “man” who started to erect the tower would “say” that he started to “build” the tower, but the following was true.

The verse goes on to say, “... and was not able to finish.” Luke continues words, “and was not able” or “and was unable and incapable” “to finish” which means “of completing the tower”. Luke shared how Jesus said the people mocking the builder would continue their “mocking” by saying he was “unable to complete” his tower.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn what the people would say who were “mocking” the man who did not “count the cost” for completing his tower”. They noted his beginning of building, but “laughed” at him because he did not have sufficient money to “complete” it. God wants people to “finish” their relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and because many people do not “count the cost” for following Jesus, they quit too soon. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus who is able to keep them in a personal relationship with Himself, and though there will be “cost” for serving Him, no one will go lacking in eternally for what they have given to serve Jesus in this life.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “what king, going to make war against another king”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
