Filly His Belly with Swine Husks - Luke 15:16

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine”, and in chapter fifteen and verse sixteen of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the younger son would, “have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat” where we read:

And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat:

and no man gave unto him.

The verse reads, “And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: Luke began with the words, “and he would fain” or “and the younger son desired, longed for, lusted after and coveted to” “have filled his belly” which means “make full his stomach and gullet” “with the husks” or “with the the name of the fruit, Ceratonia silqua or carobtree, that was a fruit shaped like a horn and has a sweet taste; it was and is used not only for fattening swine, but as an article of food by the lower classes” “that the swine did eat” which means “that the hogs or pigs devoured and consumed”. Luke shared how Jesus said the younger son was so hungry that he desired to eat the “pig's food”.

The verse goes on to say, “and no man gave unto him.” Luke continued with the words, “and no man” or “and not one person whether male or female” “gave unto him” which means “granted, supplied, furnished and delivered any food to the younger son”. Luke shared how Jesus said nobody gave the younger son any food to eat.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how far down this younger son slid. From “living high on the hog” to “living with the hogs”, this son fell from greatness in status and provision to having nothing. Sometimes God will allow people to get to the “bottom” before they will look to Him for provision. God's desire is to have a personal loving relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, regardless of where they are in life, on top or on bottom, the wise person humbles themselves and receives His gift of “salvation” and “provision”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the younger son, “came to himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
