Great Multitudes Went with Jesus - Luke 14:25

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man made a great supper, and bade many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray you have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray you have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus told how the host said, “none of these men which were bidden shall taste of my supper” where we read:

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

The verse reads, “And there went great multitudes with him:” Luke began with the words, “and there went” or “and there came together, journeyed with and assemble alongside” “great multitudes with him” which means “massive, large and abundant crowds of people with Jesus”. Luke shared how a huge crowd of people gathered themselves around Jesus again.

The verse continues, “and he turned, and said unto them,” Luke added the words, “and he turned” or “and Jesus turned around toward the people”, “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the crowd of people” the words in the next verse. Luke shared how Jesus turned around and spoke the words in our next verse to the crowd.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how a massive group of people gathered themselves to Jesus again. Because Jesus spoke great things, did great things and demonstrated great things, people were attracted to Him. Those people had no idea of the suffering He would endure on their behalf, and because He was “famous” among them and like a “celebrity”, they followed Him. God has a plan for mankind, and those who choose to follow Him should carefully attend to His words because they will determine whether a person yields their life to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” or not.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus declared people who, “cannot be” His “disciple” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
