Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be seasoned?”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus says salt that has lost it's savor, “is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill” where we read:
It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill;
but men cast it out. He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
The verse reads, “It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill;” Luke began with the words, “it is neither fit” or “the unsavory and insipid salt is not and in no way well placed or useful” “for the land” which means “to the ground, earth, abode of men and animals, country or tract of land”, “nor yet for the dunghill” or “no and not in any way toward manure”. Luke shared how Jesus said “unsavory and insipid” “salt” is of no use to “the ground” or a “manure pile”.
The verse continues, “but men cast it out. He that has ears to hear, let him hear.” Luke added the words, “but men cast it out” or “moreover, nonetheless and notwithstanding male human beings throw and scatter the salt away”. “He that has ears to hear” which means “the person whether male or female who has been given the faculty for hearing, perceiving with the mind, understanding and knowing”, “let him hear” or “allow and permit that person to attend to, consider, understand and perceive what Jesus said”. Luke shared how Jesus said “men” throw away “salt” that is “unsavory and insipid”, and those who are willing to “hear” and “understand” His words should do so.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus declared is done with “salt” that has become worthless – It is thrown out into the roadways. The idea was for those who would “hear” His words to keep having influence in the world. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and when He fills their life with His Holy Spirit, they become a purifying and seasoning agent for Him. God loves everyone, and when His followers fulfill their purpose people are influenced to be His followers as well. Let all who read these words be as “salt” in the world, and never have need to be “cast away” from Him.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share, “then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
