The Elder Son - Luke 15:25

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, And am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am no more worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring here the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-five of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “his elder son was in the field” where we read:

Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew near to the house,

he heard music and dancing.

The verse reads, “Now his elder son was in the field: Luke began with the words, “now his elder son” or “however and moreover the father's older and advanced in age male progeny and offspring” “was in the field” which means “was within the farm, country seat and neighboring hamlet”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “father's” “older son” was located on the “farmland”.

The verse continues, “and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.” Luke added the words, “and as he came” or “and at the time the elder son arose and appeared” “and drew nigh to the house” which means “and came near to and approached the father's dwelling place, habitation and abode”, “he heard music” or “the father was given the faculty for hearing, discovered and perceived music playing” “and dancing” which means “and circular or round dancing”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “elder son” overheard “music and dancing” as he approached his home.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the “older son” of the father who was out in the “field” while his younger brother returned home. As the “older son” approached his home, he “heard music and dancing” within the house. We shall see how this affects this “older son” in the next few verses, but suffice it for now to understand there is a “celebration” in Heaven given over every person who believes and trusts in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. God has “music and dancing” ready for all who submit to His Son Jesus, and those who are wise allow the “celebrations” to begin.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus said the elder son, “asked what these things meant”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
