The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, And am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am no more worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring here the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “his elder son was in the field” where we read:
And he said unto him, Your brother is come; and your father has killed the fatted calf,
because he has received him safe and sound.
The verse reads, “And he said unto him, Your brother is come; and your father has killed the fatted calf, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto him” or “and the servant uttered, declared and proclaimed to the elder son”, “your brother is come” which means “the elder brother's younger brother has appeared and come home”; “and your father” or “and the elder brother's progenitor and immediate ancestor” “has killed the fatted calf” which means “has sacrificed, immolated, slaughtered and slain the fattened young bullock or heifer”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “servant” told the “elder son” that his younger brother came home and his “father” “sacrificed” the “fattened calf” to eat.
The verse continues, “... because he has received him safe and sound.” Luke added the words, “because he has received him” or “since and on account that the father took back again and recovered the younger son” “safe and sound” which means “well and in good health”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “servant” told the “elder son” the reason his father was because his “younger brother” returned home “well and in good health”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “elder son” discovered the reason why there was “music, dancing and celebration” within his house. The “younger brother” returned home after squandering his inheritance, and now the father of he and the “elder son” was having a celebration for him. God desires to provide a “celebration” for every person who yields their life to His Son Jesus , and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, regardless of who else knows, the party will begin.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus said the servant answered, “your brother is come; and you father has killed the fatted calf”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
