The apostle John wrote how Jesus' disciple Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it suffices us. Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known me, Philip? he that has seen me has seen the Father; and how say you then, Show us the Father? Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twelve of his book John shared how Jesus said, “He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also”, where we read:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also;
and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
The verse reads, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also;” John began with the words, “Verily, verily” which means “truly, truly or surely, surely” “I say unto you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to you, Philip”, “He that believes in me” which means “the person whether male or female who trusts in, relies upon, clings to and has confidence in me, Jesus”, “the works that I do” or “the enterprises, undertakings, acts and deeds that I, Jesus, perform, make ready and produce” “shall he do also” which means “will the person who believes in Jesus even so and indeed perform, make ready and produce”. John shared how Jesus certifiably declared that every person who “trusts in and relies upon” Him will “perform and produce” the “same” acts and deeds that He did upon the earth.
The verse goes on to say, “and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John continued with the words, “and greater works than these” which means “and numerous, large and abundant enterprises, undertakings, acts and deeds” “shall he do” or “will the person who believes in Jesus perform, make ready and produce”; “because I go” which means “since and on account that I, Jesus, depart and leave” “unto my Father” or “to my, Jesus', Heavenly Father God”. John shared how Jesus said the person who “trusts in and relies upon” Him will perform and produce “numerous and abundant” “acts and deeds” “because” He was to “depart” from them and go to His Heavenly Father God.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus certifiably declared the people who “trust in and rely upon” Him will do the “acts and deeds” that He did upon the earth, and their “activities” will be “numerously and abundantly” beyond those Jesus performed. The reason they would be able to do “greater” works is because Jesus was to “leave” them and go to His Heavenly Father God. Because Jesus was in an “earthly body”, He was limited in time and space while He was in the world . When Jesus departed, He sent His “Holy Spirit” to indwell every person who believes in Him. Now the works of Jesus Christ are spread throughout the world, and multitudes of believers in Jesus are able to perform these “acts and deeds”. Let all who read these words yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and receive the ability of God the Father to perform numerous “acts and deeds” through their willing hearts and lives.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
