The apostle John wrote how Jesus declared to His disciple Philip, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirteen of his book John shared how Jesus said, “whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do”, where we read:
And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
The verse reads, “And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, ...” John began with the words, “and whatsoever you shall ask” which means “and whatever even and also you, the disciples of Jesus, will crave, desire and require” “in my name” or “within my, Jesus', name which is used for everything which the name covers including the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”, “that will I do” which means “that which is asked shall I, Jesus, perform, make ready and produce”. John shared how Jesus told “Philip” whatever he “requested and craved”, when he did so within Jesus' name, He would perform and produce for Him.
The verse continues, “... that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John added the words, “that the Father” which means “so the Heavenly Father God” “may be glorified” or “will be magnified, extolled, honored and celebrated” “in the Son” which means “within the Son, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus said the purpose of people receiving “whatever” they ask in His name and Him performing it was so “God the Father” would be “magnified, honored and celebrated” within His life.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus told “Philip” “whatever” he asked for in “His name”, He would produce it so God the Father would be “magnified and celebrated” within His life. Jesus' other disciples were with “Philip” as Jesus spoke, and all of them heard these words. Believers in Jesus are those who have “denied themselves, taken up their cross and followed Him”, and because they are focused upon spiritual things, they do not ask for selfish things but make their requests according to the Kingdom of God. God loves people, and His desire is to provide them with that which is best for their lives, and there is no better “request” of God than to ask Him to forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Let all who read these words understand Jesus' saying and yield their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “if you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
