How Can We Know the Way? - John 14:5

The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know”, and in chapter fourteen and verse five of his book John shared how Jesus' disciple Thomas asked, “how can we know the way?” where we read:

Thomas said unto him, Lord, we know not where you go; and how can we know the way?

The verse reads, “Thomas said unto him, Lord, we know not where you go;” John began with the words, “Thomas said unto him” which means “Thomas whose name means a twin and was one of Jesus' disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “Lord” or “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title to God the Messiah” “we know not” which means “we, disciples of Jesus, do not perceive, notice, discover or discern” “where you go” or “the place and location to which you, Jesus, withdraw and depart”. John shared how Jesus' disciple “Thomas” told Him they were unaware of “where” He was going.

The verse goes on to say, “and how can we know the way?” John continued with the words, “or how can we know” which means “and in what way are we, disciples of Jesus, able and capable to perceive, notice, discover or discern” “the way” or “the traveled road and journey”? John shared how “Thomas” asked Jesus in what way they were to “perceive” the “traveled road” of which He spoke.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus' disciple “Thomas” voiced the concern of all His disciples when He told Jesus they were unaware of the place He was going, and they did not perceive the “journey” to get there. Jesus will answer “Thomas” in our next verse, but for now let us focus upon the admission of “Thomas” as an example of the “way” anyone should come to a relationship with Jesus Christ. “Ignorance”, with a willingness to learn, is a wonderful trait, and when a person humbles themselves and says, “I don't know, but I want to know” like “Thomas”, they more readily find the answer. Jesus Christ came to have a personal relationship with people, and when they humble themselves before Him and yield their lives to Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and show them “where He is going” and how to get there.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
