The Spirit of Truth - John 14:17

The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, If you love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever”, and in chapter fourteen and verse seventeen of his book John shared how the Father, “shall give you another Comforter”, where we read:

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it sees him not, neither knows him: but you know him; for he dwells with you, and shall be in you.

The verse reads,Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it sees him not, neither knows him: John began with the words, “even the Spirit” which means “the same it the third person of the triune God who is the Holy Spirit and is coequal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son” “of truth” or “pertaining to what is true in any matter under consideration, reality, fact and certainty”; “whom the world cannot receive” which means “whom the circle of the earth and it's inhabitants are unable and incapable of laying hold of, claiming, procuring and taking to itself”, “because it sees him not” or “since and on account that the world does not behold, observe, notice or discern the Spirit of truth”, “neither knows him” which means “no and not in any way does the world perceive, understand, notice or discern the Spirit of truth”. John shared how Jesus identified the “Comforter” as the “Spirit of truth” whom the world and it's inhabitants is unable to “procure” since it does not notice or perceive Him.

The verse continues, but you know him; for he dwells with you, and shall be in you.John added the words, “but you know him” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover you, the disciples of Jesus, perceive, notice, discover and discern the Spirit of truth”; “for he dwells with you” or “because, since and on account that he, the Spirit of truth, lives, abides, remains and tarries alongside of you, disciples of Jesus”, “and shall be in you” which means “and will exist within you, disciples of Jesus”. John shared how Jesus told His disciples they were already aware of “the Spirit of truth” because He was alongside them, and Jesus declared He would abide within them.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus declared the “Comforter” who was Jesus called the “Spirit of truth” was already known by His disciples. The “Spirt of truth” came alongside Jesus' disciples at this point in their walk with Him, but Jesus promised the “Comforter” would “be” inside of them. When a person surrenders their life to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, His Holy Spirit comes inside of them to live. Before they receive Jesus as their “Savior”, “the Comforter” comes alongside them to direct them to Him. Those who yield themselves to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and be given the power to “keep His commandments” by His “Spirit of truth”. Let all who read these words understand and yield.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “I will not leave you comfortless”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
