The apostle John wrote how Jesus' disciple Philip said to Jesus, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fourteen of his book John shared how Jesus said, “if you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it”, where we read:
If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
The verse reads, “If you shall ask any thing in my name, ...” John began with the words, “if you shall ask” which means “whether or in case you, Philip, request, crave and desire” “anything” or “a certain or particular thing” “in my name” which means “with my, Jesus', name which is used for everything the name covers including the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering” the following will occur. John shared how Jesus told “Philip” “if” He asked for any particular thing the following would happen.
The verse goes on to say, “... I will do it.” John continued with the words, “I will” which means “I, Jesus” “do it” or “will make ready, prepare and produce that which is desired”. John shared how Jesus said He would perform, make ready and produce whatever “Philip” as a disciple of Jesus requested.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we discover one of the greatest promises Jesus ever gave. He told “Philip” in the presence of His other disciples that He would produce whatever they requested of Him. The idea was “Philip” was a “disciple” of Jesus, and because He “denied himself, took up his cross and followed” Him, Jesus would do what He asked. In other words, “Philip” and all Jesus' disciples were to ask for “things” that were not just for their own selfish desires but according to the “works” of God's Kingdom. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When a person surrenders their life to Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with God in Heaven. Requests toward the eternal purposes of God will be performed by Jesus, and those who are wise will “ask” Him for these things.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “if you love me, keep my commandments”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
