A Sound From Heaven - Acts 2:2

Luke the physician wrote about the disciples, “when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place”, and in chapter two and verse two of the book of Acts Luke wrote, “suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind” where we read:

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind,

and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

The verse begins, “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, ... Luke began with the words, “and suddenly there came a sound” which means “and unaware and unexpectedly there arose and appeared a roaring noise” “from heaven” or “from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings” “as of a rushing mighty wind” which means “like a moving, driving, violent and forcible respiration, breeze or breath ”. Luke shared how a “roaring noise like a violent and forcible breath” unexpectedly appeared.

The verse continues, “... and it filled all the house where they were sitting.” Luke added the words, “and it filled all the house” or “and the sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind consummated and made completed each, every, the whole and everywhere in the upper room and dwelling place” “where they were sitting” which means “in the place and location the people in the upper room were seated and established”. Luke shared how the “rushing mighty wind” “filled” the entire dwelling place where the people in the upper room were gathered together in “one accord”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover what happened in the “house” where the one hundred and twenty people were gathered in the upper room. These people, including the disciples of Jesus, some other women, Mary the mother of Jesus and Jesus' brothers, were in “one accord” and praying to God, and this “sudden” and “forcible violent wind” “filled” the entire “house” where they were “seated”. This manifestation of God will be further described in our next verses, but this is essentially the beginning of the power given by the Holy Spirit of God to start the church. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when the church was birthed, these people were to be His messengers to the world for His “good news” - “the gospel”. Those who carefully examine these events will discover God's willingness to use people to share His salvation plan and surrender their lives to the only One who is able to extend this kind of manifestation to mankind.

Next time Luke shares how, “there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
