Aceldama - Acts 1:19

Luke the physician wrote how the disciples of Jesus, some women, Mary the mother of Jesus and His brothers were gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem, and “in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out”, and in chapter one and verse nineteen of the book of Acts Luke wrote how Peter said the field was known as, “Aceldama, that is to say, the field of blood” where we read:

And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem;

insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

The verse begins, “And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; Luke began with the words, “and it was known” which means “and the purchase of a field with the wages of unrighteousness obtained by Judas who betrayed Jesus was noted, perceived and understood” “unto all the dwellers” or “to each, every, the whole and everyone who lived and abode” “at Jerusalem” which means “in the city of Jerusalem which means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine”. Luke shared how “all” the people in “Jerusalem” knew about the “field” which was purchased with the wages given to and returned by Judas when He betrayed Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.” Luke continued with the words, “insomuch as that field” or “so that, therefore and wherefore that particular place, land or piece of ground” “is called in their proper tongue” which means “is given in the Jewish people's own language”, “Acelama” or “field of blood”, “that is to say” which means “which is to utter, declare and proclaim the place as”, “the field of blood” or “the land or piece of ground pertaining to bloodshed”. Luke shared how the “field” which was purchased with Judas' wages for betraying Jesus was known as the “ground of bloodshed”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how all the people in the city of “Jerusalem” knew about the “field” that was purchased with the “blood money” given to Judas for betraying Jesus. They named the “field”, “Aceldama”, which was an appropriate name for the cost of the land. God knew this would come to pass, and Zechariah wrote about it. (See Zechariah 11:12-13) God's plan of salvation was in place, and the detail concerning a “field of blood” named “Aceldama” was part of the fulfillment of scripture. God revealed to all who study His word that His Son Jesus is the Messiah and Savior of the world. Those who put their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Let all who read these words carefully consider this “field” and surrender their life to the One who was betrayed for it's purchase price.

Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “it is written in the book of Psalms, let his habitation be desolate”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
