In Psalms chapter seven David wrote if he were guilty of any wickedness, “Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yes, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah”, and in chapter seven and verse six of Psalms David declared, “Arise, O LORD, in your anger” where we read,
Arise, O LORD, in your anger, lift up yourself because of the rage of my enemies:
and awake for me to the judgment that you have commanded.
The verse begins, “Arise, O LORD, in your anger, lift up yourself because of the rage of my enemies:” David began with the words, “Arise, O LORD” which means “Stand up, be fixed and rouse up O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “in your anger” or “with Jehovah's rapid breathing and nostril and nose wrinkled”, “and lift up yourself” which means “bear, carry, support and sustain your own self, Jehovah” “because of the rage” or “on account of the outpouring, overflow, excess, fury, wrath and arrogance” “of my enemies” which means “belonging to the ones who distressed, vexed, were hostile to and harassed David”. David asked Jehovah to rise up and sustain Himself on account of David's foes and adversaries.
The verse continues, “and awake for me to the judgment that you have commanded.” David added the words, “and awake for me” or “and be roused, incited and stirred up on behalf of David” “to the judgment” which means “to the ordinance, justice, procedure and litigation” “that you have commanded” or “that you, Jehovah, have charged, given orders, appointed and ordained”. David wanted Jehovah God to rouse up for him and bring about the justice that He appointed and ordained for his adversaries.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David turned his vengeance over to Jehovah God. David knew God loved him, and when he needed to be protected and defended, God would be his defense. Paul the apostle referred to Deuteronomy 32:35 when he wrote, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord”, and David was practicing this principle. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for their sins. We have an opportunity to appeal to the LORD when we have opposition against us because of our relationship with Him, and He will avenge us of our adversaries as we give Him praise and glory.
Next time David says, “So shall the congregation of the people compass you about”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
