In Psalms chapter thirty nine David said, “Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish. I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because you did it. Remove your stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of your hand”, and in chapter thirty nine and verse eleven of Psalms David told what happens when Jehovah God, “corrects man for iniquity” where we read,
When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
The verse begins, “When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth:” David began with the words, “when you with rebukes” or “at the time and moment you, Jehovah God, by the use of corrections, reproofs, punishment and chastisement” “do correct man for iniquity” which means “chasten, instruct, discipline and admonish people whether male or female because of their faults, mischief, perversity, depravity and evil”, “you make his beauty” or “you, Jehovah God, cause the person's covetousness, pleasure and great delight” “to consume away like a moth” which means “to melt, dissolve and cause to intimidate in likeness to a waster as a moth”. David said at the time and moment Jehovah God reproves a person who sins, the pleasure and delight of the person melts and dissolves away.
The verse continues, “surely every man is vanity. Selah.” David added the words, “surely every man” or “indeed, howbeit, nevertheless, not withstanding and truly each, every, the whole and everyone of the people both male and female” “is vanity” which means “exists as a breath, vapor or something that is transitory and unsatisfactory”. “Selah” or “lift up, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. David said every person exists like a vapor, and those reading and listening to his words should pause and think about this idea.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God corrects people when they sin. Sin has consequences, and Jehovah God set His rules before us to protect us from the damage sin can do. God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of everybody, and when we humble ourselves before Him, and trust in, rely upon and cling to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and remove every “beauty” we think we have gained in our pernicious ways. God's idea is eternal, and He gives us His Holy Spirit to lead us to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. We who believe in Jesus shall spend all eternity giving Him praise and honor for His provision to us who are as a vapor and empty on our own.
Next time David appeals to Jehovah God to, “Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
