In Psalms chapter forty four David said, “Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from your way”, and in chapter forty four and verse nineteen of Psalms David said, “you have sore broken us in the place of dragons” where we read,
Though you have sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
The verse begins, “Though you have sore broken us in the place of dragons, ...” David began with the words, “though you have sore broken us” or “yet and still you, Jehovah God, have crushed and collapsed us, David and his fellow believers” “in the place of dragons” which means “within the station, spot, locality and region belonging to sea-serpents or jackals”. David said Jehovah God crushed he and his fellow believers within the place where jackals dwell.
The verse goes on to say, “... and covered us with the shadow of death.” David continued with the words, “and covered us” or “and concealed, spread over and overwhelmed us, David and his fellow believers” “with the shadow of death” which means “by means of distress and extreme danger that leads to death's shadow”. David said Jehovah God overwhelmed he and his believing companions with distresses that led them to death's shadow.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David not only felt abandoned by Jehovah God, but he also believed that God was responsible for crushing he and his fellow believers and leading them to be among jackals and dangerous places that would end in death. Needless to say, David was distraught. Regardless of what David thought, God did not abandon David and his companions, but He allowed him to go through difficult times. Jehovah God has a purpose and plan for all of us, and on the earth we may experience afflictions and troubles. Jesus did, and it lead Him not only to the “shadow of death” but “death” itself as He died on the cross for all our sins. He provided an opportunity for every person to believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life. Though we encounter difficulties like David, let us rely upon, cling to and trust in Jesus who will eventually lead us to be with Him as He uses our troubles for His purposes in the world.
Next time David begins to say what will happen, “If we have forgotten the name of our God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
