In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how the overseers and nobles of the Medo-Persian empire assembled before King Darius and said, “All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counselors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which alters not”, and in chapter six and verse nine of his book Daniel shared how, “Darius signed the writing and the decree” where we read,
Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
The verse reads, “Wherefore king Darius signed the writing …” Daniel began with the words, “wherefore king Darius” or “therefore, then and on this account the royal ruler and leader Darius whose name means lord and was known as Darius the Mede, the son of Ahasuerus, king of the Chaldeans, who succeeded to the Babylonian kingdom on the death of Belshazzar; probably the same as "Astyages" the last king of the Medes (538 BC)” “signed the writing” which means “inscribed and engraved the written decree and requirement”. Daniel shared how “King Darius” inscribed the written requirement for people not to pray or ask anything of any god or man other than him for thirty days.
The verse continues, “… and the decree.” Daniel added the words, “and the decree” or “and the interdict or law of restriction”. Daniel shared how King Darius also “signed” the law of restriction as put forth by the overseers and lords in Medo-Persia.
When we meditate upon Daniel’s words in this verse, we discover how “King Darius” inscribed the order and command that no one was to pray or ask anything of any god or man for thirty days or they would be thrown into a lions den. This made the law absolute and final, and not even “King Darius” could alter it. We shall learn why this was so important to the overseers and lords of the Medo-Persian empire in our next few verses, but for now, let us consider the power of the “law” and God’s supervision over all these works of man. God wants us to follow Him and His laws and ways, and when we do, our lives are blessed. He knows we come short of following Him at times, and because we have sin in our lives, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to live a perfect life in keeping with His law to be crucified on the cross in our place and for our sins. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into His truth and help us follow His ways and law throughout our lives.
Next time Daniel shares what he did, “when he knew that the writing was signed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
